Fighting thru the Traffic

I must apologize for the inactivity the last couple of days, however the Road Warrior was on the road or should a I say pathway.  I had the opportunity to run the Queen City Marathon over the weekend and be a real road warrior.  Yes I finished the whole 42.2 km. although the legs may be aching the fingers are still working.  But now it is time to get back to the traffic.

  1. Road Warrior, If you are an athletic kind of individual, why not remedy your road frustrations by riding a bike? Traffic crawling or at a stand still, you could zip right by on a bike. Have you ever seen the traffic backed up on the University bridge at rush hour? (Now in the AM too, thanks the vic bridge closure) I just zip right between all the frustrated motorists. This has as number of added benefits:
    - You frustrate motorists more, because they are stuck in jammed traffic, and you are zipping by.
    - This in turn allows you to feel supremely smug.
    - Because this huge grey area exists in legislation with bikes, you do not need a license.
    - Be careful though, because they can charge you with vehicular infractions.
    - But on the plus side you don't have to produce any id, so they can make the ticket out to Joseph Smith.
    - But in all actuality, you rarely have to deal with this, because everyone including the police is so confused about the issue, they don't know whether to treat you as a car or pedestrian.

Give it a try some time, I promise you will enjoy it.

  3. Anon @ 1:05, My renegade cycling upsets you so much, that you wish harm upon me? Lighten up. When I break traffic laws on my bike, I think you would be hard pressed to say I threatening anyone else.It is not like I am running cars off the road as they try to avoid me and my reckless riding. The truth is I exercise discretion and only break laws when safe to do so. The reason I break laws is because there is no cycling infrastructure in the city. Why do you think people ride on the sidewalk? They are scared of getting hit, and cannot contemplate riding in heavy traffic.Luckily I have the skill, speed, and awareness to safely ride in a dangerous environment. Just think of that white dashed line between the backed up traffic as a third lane that only fits bikes. You might think it is dangerous, but the fact is that I am not holding back any traffic, and it is one less car causing congestion.

You should hope for more of us, then maybe you wouldn't be sitting in traffic. Beside I almost never cut past motorists at red lights, only to take the entire lane and slow everyone down when it turns green. I only do that when I am feeling bitter about the lack of consideration I receive from the motoring public :)

  4. I would love to have the type of job that allows me the "luxury" of riding to work every day on a bike, but this is not the case. I applaude those that can make it work. I do own a bike and if I every feel the need to take on a triathalon I may just use it sometime. As for the darting between vehicles and riding between lanes I leave those dangers to the foolish. Kind of like those motorcyclists in California I saw doing 60mph in a traffic jamb. I understand if they get hit the car isn't to blame. Drive safe and look out for all that use the road.
